People use "salvage title" as if it is one thing, but California treats it as two different stages. A salvage certificate is not a registration. A revived salvage car is a registered, road-legal car. A salvage certificate is what the car gets the moment it is declared a total loss. A revived salvage — what most people mean by "rebuilt title" — is that same car after repair, inspection and re-registration. What sits on a dealer lot is the second kind. It depends entirely on what the damage was and how it was repaired — but the floor is higher than most people think, because California will not register a rebuilt car until several specific things are true: A previously salvaged California car must be inspected by the DMV or referred to the CHP before it can go back on the road. Brake and light adjustment certificates, or electronic Vehicle Safety Systems Inspection certificates, are required. A car originally built with airbags must have working airbags before California will register it again. A car you can legally drive off a dealer lot has already cleared every one of those.

A salvage or rebuilt title reduces what the car sells for, and it keeps reducing it. The discount that makes the car cheap to buy is the same discount you will hand to the next buyer. That is the honest trade, and anyone who tells you the branding wears off is wrong. California does not bar insurance coverage on a revived salvage car — it is a registered, road-legal vehicle like any other. What any individual carrier is willing to offer on it is between you and that carrier, not something we or anyone else can promise on their behalf. Financing is available on most of what we sell, arranged through outside lenders rather than something we underwrite ourselves. You can start an application online in a couple of minutes — no social security number and no credit pull to begin — and someone here calls you back, usually the same day, with your options. Start a pre-approval if you would rather have the numbers in front of you before you drive out.

Where it gets more specific is a salvage or rebuilt title. Most banks will not lend on a salvage title at all, so ask us before you assume the answer is no. What we can arrange depends on the car and on your situation, and we will not put a number on it before we have talked to a lender about you specifically.

A payment you can make every month is not the same thing as a car you can actually afford — insurance and any repairs are the parts people forget to budget for. A standard pre-purchase inspection takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.
